Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829) Niels Henrik
Abel was born on August 5th 1802 in Finnøy in Norway, then a part of the Danish-Norwegian
Twin Monarchy. He died on April 6th 1829 at the age of just 26, but had nevertheless contributed
importantly to the mathematics of his time.
Abel was one of the first dedicated disciples of the great French mathematician
A.-L. Cauchy in the discussion of rigour in the early 19th century. And he contributed
in as diverse parts of our mathematics as the theory of equations, the theory of differential
equations, the theory of series, and elliptic function theory.
